Buckwheat is not a grain…it’s related to rhubarb!

Yes, you read correctly. Buckwheat is actually related to rhubarb and not to wheat.

So, why is it often mistakenly placed within the cereal family? Because of the appearance, nutritional components and wholesome nutty flavour of its seeds. Unlike grains, buckwheat is naturally gluten-free. It is also a great source of nutrients like lean protein, manganese, carbohydrates and thiamine.

What is Buckwheat?

Buckwheat is an annual plant that grows to approximatively 0.7 meters in height. Its leaves are delicate and heart shaped. The flowers are small and pink or blue-white coloured, growing in clusters on top of the stem. They produce nut-like shaped seeds, called pseudo-grains.

The name buckwheat originates from their floury outer coating. Evidence shows that its flour was first used in Southeast Asia in prehistoric times. Over the centuries, its use has spread to Europe and then North America.
